Steam engines were the first engine type to see widespread use. They were first invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1705, and James Watt (whom we remember each time we talk about "60 watt light bulbs" and such) made big improvements to steam engines in 1769. Steam engines powered all early locomotives, steam boats and factories, and therefore acted as the foundation of the industrial revolution. In this edition of How Stuff Works we will see exactly how steam engines work!

- Joe's Steam Engines
:
Joe is obviously a man who takes great pains in his work. His site has several gorgeous examples of his skill as a machinist. The Redwing Engine and the 1/2 scale Cretors popcorn engine are best described as excellent and certainly show Joe's craftsmanship quite proudly. This collection of steam engines and hit and miss engines is well worth a visit.
